The Watermen of the Chesapeake Bay & its tributaries are working tirelessly to combat the takeover.
Bluecat Fisheries is only able to do what it does because of the hard work of our Watermen and women.
Blue catfish are opportunistic predators, feeding on all of the commercial fish & shellfish that we rely on. The Watermen of the Chesapeake Bay are limited to local buyers with limited processing capacity for Blue catfish specifically, making it hard to profit from catching them year round. It was in response to the economic reality facing these watermen along with a passion for the sustainability of the Chesapeake Bay that Bluecat Fisheries was created.
The Potomac River is the second largest tributary in the Chesapeake, bordering Maryland, DC, Virginia, and West Virginia. The Watermen of the Potomac and the Patuxent river are at the epicenter of this ecological crisis, with an estimated 75% of the biomass in these tributaries being Blue catfish. Their unrelenting efforts to reduce the number of fish have proven successful, but without a sustainable price to keep them afloat, we will not see a significant impact in reclaiming our waters.
That's where we come in.
While it is our mission to provide a stable income for watermen in the region, we need your help! The fight to protect and reclaim our waters is a long one. If you are interested in getting into the career, feel free to use these resources. If you are already a commercial watermen & looking to sell your blue cats, reach out here.
